First thing the next morning before there was a chance of running into Ashlyn, I took off. I met up with one of my brothers to go fishing and then found other things to keep me away from home until nearly nine o’clock that night. I just couldn’t face her.

None of it had helped. She filled every thought of my day and the guilt I felt over leaving Ashlyn the way I had never let up.

One night a few days later I pulled into my driveway and cut the engine before I noticed the shadow on my front porch. My gut told me who it was before I could make out the face. Ashlyn.

For a moment, I considered slamming the truck back in gear and getting the hell out of there. But I didn’t. Even I wasn’t that big of a jerk.

With a sigh, I climbed out of the truck and headed for the porch.

She was sitting on one of the rattan chairs I had on my porch and she had her knees pulled up under her chin with her arms wrapped around them. She looked chilled and I wondered how long she had been waiting for me. I also wanted to pull her into my arms but I knew that was not something I could do.

“Hey,” I said but didn’t sit down. I didn’t know what else to say.

She didn’t say anything, but her eyes stayed locked on my face. And the look she was giving me cut through me to my core. But it was her silence that made me even more uneasy. “Look Ashlyn, I, uh…didn’t mean to...”

“What? You didn’t mean to do what Lucas? You didn’t mean to bail on me in the middle of the night after we had sex? You didn’t mean to make me feel like some skank you picked up at a bar? What exactly didn’t you mean to do?” Her words were clipped and filled with emotion which made me feel like an even bigger asshole.

“I didn’t mean to hurt you Ashlyn. I got a little freaked out when you… it doesn’t matter. I freaked and then I took off. And I’m sorry.” I meant the words but the look on her face said she didn’t care.

“You know, I actually thought we were friends before anything else and I didn’t think you would treat a friend like that. But I guess I was wrong about you, huh Lucas? You really don’t care about anyone but yourself.” There was just enough light from the neighborhood street lights and the moon for me to see the tears that shimmered in her eyes.

Dammit, I knew I had really screwed up but instead of manning up and doing what I could to make things better, I doubled down on being a jerk.

“Hey, I told you I was an asshole from the start, but you wanted to believe things would be different with you. Guess what? People don’t change just because they have sex.” That would the first of many lies I would tell her.
